It is the mechanism by by witch Earth's atmosphere behaves like the panes of glass on a
greenhouse, allowing solar warmth escaping back into space- thus raising the temperature inside the "greenhouse". Certain gasses (especially water vapor and carbon dioxide)act like the panes of glas, allowing solar heat to pass in but not out. These are called greenhouse gasses.

IS THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT HARMFUL?

Generaly, no. It is a natural phenomenon that regulates the word's temperature and makes the planet's surface warmer that it would otherwise be. With out the greenhouse effect, life as we know it would be possible on Earth.

SO WHAT'S THE PROBLEM ?

The green house effect is a finely tuned mechanism, and if its delicated balance is upsed, Earth's surface could become dangerously hot, with potentially carastrophyc results for life on the planet.
